Key Additions: Chris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, Kelly Olynyk, MarShon Brooks, Vitor Faverani, and Keith Bogans
Key Departures: Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry, and Paul Pierce
The Celtics, with the departure of Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce, are no longer looking to be a contender this season but the future is bright in Boston. With the departure of these stars and bringing in a rookie head coach Boston is in rebuilding mode this season and will look to cash in on the draft and next years free agent class. Brad Stevens is an excellent coach and hopefully will be able to transition well to the pro ranks in this and subsequent seasons. Kelly Olynyk had a stand out performance in the summer league and could be a rookie player to watch this season. Another player whose progress will be important to the Celtics long term success is Jeff Green who showed that he can be a go to scoring option against any team. The overall objective for the Celtics this season is to see what they have with their current roster, make sure Rondo doesn't come back until he is completely healthy ala Derrick Rose, and get a high lottery pick in the draft next year.
As far as their current roster goes there are some interesting things to watch for this year. The biggest thing for this team will be to see how well Brad Stevens can transition from the college to pro game. He was a wizard at Butler always overachieving with rosters people really never expected to go anywhere. It is pretty obvious what Boston got when it received Chris Humphries and Gerald Wallace from the Nets but there are some other pieces whose development will be interesting to watch. Making sure Rondo waits to come back or doesn't even come back at all this season should be fairly simple as they are not looking to contend this season and who really wants to come back, mid season, to a team which is basically looking to lose games? Overall this season will not be a good ones for Boston Celtics fans but look out next season is just over the horizon.
