Last season was the worlds last chance to see the New Orleans Hornets and it is to be hoped the world won't have to see them again. The birth of the New Orleans Pelicans comes at a time where they are looking to reshape their franchise and build around the emerging star Anthony Davis. He set the tone last season for New Orleans but unfortunately caught the injury bug and spent the a ton of time on the sidelines. The good part for the Pelicans is that when he was on the floor he looked to be possibly in the early stages of becoming a star in this league. His freakish athletic ability and his excellent defensive savvy bode well for a young player who is just scratching the surface of his potential. Look for The Brow to have a huge season this year and continue to develop his game especially his ability to score on the offensive end. Another key piece which New Orleans will need to remain healthy this season is Eric Gordon, Gordon has continued to battle health issues for and did not live up to expectations last season. It is to be hoped that such a nonperformance will motivate him to do much better this season.
This year will be one for the Pelicans to analyze the talent they have on the roster and make some shrew moves to improve while still having cap space to make a run at some acquisitions in this upcoming free agent class. Monty Williams will have to adjust his style of coaching with this young small team and allow them to run the floor and work in transition if he hopes to get the best out of them. This is simply not a team which is built to succeed in set up half court offense. It is to be hoped that in doing this the Pelicans offensive ratings will improve significantly. There is no doubt that a defense first coach like Monty Williams will have New Orleans making life difficult for other teams with a player like Davis providing a needed anchor on the inside. A thing which could prove to be an issue with this team is their dearth of guards. So many of the acquisitions this team made, as well as their existing players, and undersized to play any position but guard. The Pelicans should be a team who is very active in the trade market for teams who need a spare guard of two. Overall this will be a much improved team from last year. As long as they can all stay healthy watching the Pelicans will be much more entertaining that watching the Hornets, at least in recent years.
