We really liked East Tennessee State coming into the season given their makeup of talent and experience and the Bucs haven’t disappointed standing 7-1 overall heading into this tough test on the road. ETSU hasn’t gone against the toughest schedule by any means and their one defeat thus far came on the road against a strong UNCW squad by a final of 59-68. ETSU has a plethora of offensive talent and the Bucs currently rank 42nd in the nation in scoring average as well as a solid 79th in total defense. These numbers are partially inflated by a more manageable schedule. Veteran T.J. Cromer leads the attack averaging 19.1 points per game.
The Dayton Flyers have a solid home court advantage which Dayton will try to use to their advantage as the Flyers try to get past the Bucs. Dayton has gotten off to a decent start this year standing 6-2 overall with their better wins coming against Alabama, New Mexico, and Winthrop. Dayton does have a home defeat this season coming against Saint Mary’s by a final of 57-61. Dayton doesn’t typically try to push the pace of play when going against tougher competition and this squad currently ranks a respectable 85th in the nation in scoring average and 95th in total defense. The Flyers have a very strong backcourt led by Cooke and Smith who’re averaging 19.5 and 14.6 points per game respectively.
This should be a great test for both of these squads and a chance for each group to pick up a resume building win in the nonconference. ETSU’s worst offensive performance this season came in their one road game and it’ll be interesting to see if that’s the case today. We like for the Bucs to keep things competitive enough to cover this moderate spread against the Flyers.
