Notre Dame lost their two best players from last year’s tournament team, but this group has gotten off to a nice start out of the gate standing 9-0 overall against a somewhat manageable slate. In their last outing Notre Dame got past a solid IPFW squad at home beating the Mastodons by a final of 87-72. Some of Notre Dame’s better wins have come against Colorado, Northwestern, and their last outing against Fort Wayne. Notre Dame gets a bit step up in competition today in what will be a good measuring stick game for this group. The Irish have been putting up some strong offensive numbers this season led by Bonzie Colson who’s averaging 17.1 points per game.
The Villanova Wildcats have looked tremendous out of the gate standing 9-0 overall with some of their better resume wins coming against Purdue on the road, Wake Forest, UCF, Charleston, and La Salle among others. Villanova brings back a plethora of veteran talent from last year’s title team and the Wildcats looked primed to make another run to the championship this season. Villanova puts in the effort on both sides of the ball ranking 58th in the nation in scoring average and 34th in total defense. The Wildcats can spread the ball around and Josh Hart has led the attack averaging 17.6 points.
This game will be played on a neutral site at the Prudential Center in NJ, but the stadium is a bit closer to the Villanova campus likely given them more of the home crowd advantage. We love what we’ve been seeing out of Villanova so far this season and this is going to be another good test for the defending champs. Take the Wildcats to win and cover as the best bet in this one.
