Jacksonville State has been a bit streaky so far this season standing 5-5 overall and the Gamecocks have fallen in their last two outings against the likes of Samford and UL Monroe on the road in competitive contests. The Gamecocks are going against a road heavy schedule in the nonconference with this being their 8th true road game already, and JSU still has their next 5 games on the road before they head into conference play. Fatigue could be an issue for this well traveled group and on the year the Gamecocks rank 214th in the nation in scoring average and 163rd in total defense. The offense spreads the ball around with 5 guys averaging between 8-13 points per game.
Maryland only returns 1 starter from last year’s tournament team and as a result we expect the Terps to take a significant step back this year in the highly competitive Big Ten. Maryland has taken advantage of a home heavy and manageable schedule standing 10-1 overall with their one defeat coming against Pittsburgh at home. In their last outing Maryland had a tough time putting away Saint Peter’s as the Terps went on to win by a final of 66-56. The Terps have been inconsistent on the offensive end leaning on their defense as this group ranks 192nd in the nation in scoring and 49th in total defense. As expected Melo Trimble is leading the team averaging 17.2 points per game.
The road heavy travel schedule for Jacksonville State is somewhat concerning coming into this matchup on the road against a superior opponent. We’re not all that high on this Maryland squad, but we like for the Terps to be a bit more motivated today coming off a less than dominating win as they go on to win and cover this large spread.
