Tennessee Tech has had their shortcomings this season against the tougher teams they’ve faced and the Golden Eagles get one of their more difficult matchups of the nonconference here going on the road against Tennessee. Tennessee Tech stands 4-7 overall and the Golden Eagles actually looked very respectable in their last outing on the road losing to Michigan State by a final of 63-71. Even though this was a competitive loss for the Golden Eagles this group has also fallen in convincing fashion against teams like Georgia Tech, Central Michigan, and Southern. TTU has been largely competitive this season however and this group ranks 156th in the nation in scoring and 186th in total defense.
Tennessee remains a work in progress under head coach Rick Barnes, but this program is heading in the right direction bringing in some compelling talent. Tennessee stands just 4-4 on the year, but all of their defeats have come against solid competition. In their last outing the Vols nearly picked up an impressive win on the road, but Tennessee came up just short in the end losing to North Carolina in a tough environment by a final of 71-73. Prior to that loss the Vols had picked up three straight blowout wins against some more manageable competition like the matchup they’ll face today. The Vols can get out and run as this unit ranks 71st in the nation in scoring average with 7 guys averaging over 8 points per contest.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Tennessee can use their strong performance on the road against UNC to propel them going forward. TTU is going back to back on the road against solid competition which can have a wearing effect on a squad. We like Tennessee to utilize their athleticism as they go on to win and cover this large spread at home.
