Arkansas State has gotten off to a solid start to the year standing 7-2 overall with some really impressive wins coming against the likes of Georgetown and Chattanooga. The Red Wolves are coming off their worst outing of the year however losing to TCU on the road by a final of 54-77. Arkansas State has shown that they can win on the road though picking up some nice road wins against Georgetown and Army in the nonconference. The Red Wolves have played off of their defense as Arkansas State ranks 89th in the nation in total defense and 143rd in scoring average. Devin Carter has led this balanced offensive attack averaging 15.7 points per game.
UT Martin is another squad that’s put up some nice results in the nonconference standing 8-3 overall heading into this challenge against the Red Wolves at home. UT Martin is also coming off their worst result of the regular season losing to Illinois State the other day on the road by a final of 57-74. The Skyhawks couldn’t get their offense going against Illinois State, but that largely hasn’t been an issue for this group as UT Martin ranks 61st in the nation in scoring average compared to just 262nd in total defense. The Skyhawks have three main offensive threats with Mobley, Edwards, and Butler all averaging over 15 points per game.
This is one of those interesting under the radar type matchups today in college basketball as two of the better teams from the Sun Belt and OVC go head to head. Both of these teams have gotten off to better starts than expected this season and this is shaping up to be a solid matchup. We like the Red Wolves’ defense a lot more and that could be the difference maker. Side with Arkansas State to cover the spread in what should be a competitive contest.
