Without starting point guard B.J. Taylor in their last outing, UCF really struggled running their offense as the Knights went on to lose at home to Penn by a final of 49-58. This was by far the worst result of the year for UCF who now stands 7-2 overall with their only other loss coming against Villanova on a neutral site by 10 points. UCF has been putting together a solid nonconference leaning on their defense as this group ranks 2nd in the nation in total defense compared to 278th in scoring average. With leading scorer Taylor out other guys need to step up for the Knights and that can be difficult as this group doesn’t go very deep with their bench.
George Washington was expected to take a step back this season and that’s looked to be the case thus far, even though this squad is more than competent, standing 7-4 overall. The Colonials have won two straight including a very nice 3 point win on the road against Temple a week back. George Washington has fallen in a number of their tougher matchups and the Colonials best wins have come against teams like Siena, Harvard, and Temple. In their last outing George Washington got past Howard at home by a final of 79-62. The Colonials don’t mind slowing things down as this squad ranks just 270th in the nation in scoring and big man Tyler Cavanugh has led the attack averaging 16.9 points per game.
UCF is clearly hurt by Taylor being out, but GW is also not playing at full strength either with Watanabe sidelined. UCF is coming off their worst performance of the year and it’ll be interesting to see how this group bounces back on the road. Even though we really like UCF, more specifically with Taylor in the lineup, we like George Washington to come through today at home with the Knights trying to figure things out on the offensive end.
