Appalachian State doesn’t mind pushing the pace of action and this group has gotten off to an expected start to the year standing 3-5 overall coming into this test on the road against NC State. App State has gone against some tough competition losing on the road against teams like Davidson, Tennessee, and Duke. App State has padded their numbers a bit against some lesser teams as the Mountaineers rank 40th in the nation in scoring average and 224th in total defense. App State has been pretty competitive this season with their only loss coming by more than this spread was against Duke on the road. App State has some decent depth with Shabazz leading the squad averaging 15.5 points per game.
We weren’t quite as high on this NC State squad coming into the year as a lot of people as the Wolf Pack are relying a lot on underclassmen to get the job done. NC State was also unable to get to the Big Dance last season and that was with the very talented PG Cat Barber leading the way. NC State has had some nice results to start the year standing 7-2 overall with their only defeats coming against the likes of Creighton and Illinois. NC State has shown some poor defensive efforts this year and this squad currently ranks just 255th in the nation in total defense compared to 74th in scoring average. Freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. has made an impact right out of the gate leading NC State averaging 18.3 points per game.
App State likes to put up a lot of shots and they should be able to play their style here on the road against an NC State group that has also been putting up some solid offensive numbers this season. This should be a high scoring game with NC State coming through, but we like the Mountaineers to keep things competitive enough to cover the large spread.
