South Dakota has put up some nice results so far this season in the nonconference standing 8-4 overall heading into this matchup on the road. South Dakota has taken advantage of a home heavy slate so far this season and on the road this group stands 1-2 overall with their win coming in their opener against Drake. In their last outing the Coyotes coasted past Sacramento State at home by a final of 72-56. South Dakota doesn’t mind playing in the half court and on the year the Coyotes rank 176th in the nation in scoring average and 108th in total defense. South Dakota is an unselfish group spreading the ball around with 4 players averaging in double figures.
The Portland Pilots have been putting up some strong offensive numbers so far this season as the Pilots rank 56th in the nation in scoring average compared to 244th in total defense. Portland has faced some elite competition this season losing in their matchups against UCLA, Dayton, and Colorado on their way to standing 5-3 overall. In their last outing Portland looked less than impressive on the defensive end as the Pilots went on to beat UT-Rio Grande Valley by a final of 90-89. Portland has shown the ability to win convincingly at home blowing past teams like UC Riverside and CS Northridge. Portland is led by Wintering and Johnson who’re averaging 22.3 and 18.5 points per game respectively.
Portland brings in an offense that has a higher ceiling than South Dakota, while the Coyotes have been stronger than the Pilots on the defensive end this season. Portland has a decent home court advantage that could play a factor in this matchup. We’ll side with the home team to come through as they go on to win and cover the spread.
Portland -4 -115
