The Dayton Flyers are looking to build up their nonconference RPI and a win here against Northwestern would certainly help the Flyers’ case. Dayton has opened the season 7-2 overall with their defeats coming against Saint Mary’s and Nebraska. In their last outing the Flyers impressed as Dayton went on to beat a quality ETSU squad at home by a final of 75-61. Dayton is a hardnosed veteran group that likes to win on the defensive end and this group currently ranks 84th in the nation in total defense as well as 89th in scoring average. The Flyers have some steady offensive options with 4 players averaging over 12 points per game with Charles Cooke leading the way averaging 20 points per contest.
The Northwestern Wildcats are another team hoping to build up a nonconference resume worthy of at-large consideration and Northwestern will get a lot of resume building chances come conference play in the Big Ten. This is the kind of matchup that could help decide teams on the bubble come March, but that’s a far ways off yet. Northwestern looked less than impressive in their last outing getting by Chicago State at home by a final of 68-64. In their two defeats this season Northwestern has fallen to Butler and Notre Dame in very close battles. On the year the Wildcats rank 40th in the nation in total defense and 109th in scoring average. Vic Law leads the team averaging 15.8 points per game.
This has the ingredients to be a very competitive matchup between these squads on the neutral site at the United Center. We like both of these teams to make a push for the NCAA tournament, but Dayton probably needs this kind of win more given the A-10 isn’t quite as strong as the Big Ten. In what should be a great game we’ll side with the veteran Flyers to go on to win and cover the spread.
