Notre Dame has gotten off to a stronger start to the year than most expected as the Irish stand 9-1 overall with their only loss coming against Villanova on a neutral site in competitive fashion. Notre Dame has picked up some nice resume building wins in the nonconference against teams like Colorado, Northwestern, and even their 15 point win over IPFW looks pretty strong. In their last outing a week ago Notre Dame fell to Villanova by a final of 66-74. The Irish have been building off of their offensive success ranking 16th in the nation in scoring average and 55th in total defense. Notre Dame has some strong offensive options with 4 guys averaging at least 13 points per game.
Purdue has built their strength off of their strong frontcourt this season as the Boilermakers stand 8-2 overall with their defeats coming against Villanova and Louisville. In their last outing Purdue suffocated Cleveland State at home as the Boilermakers went on to win by a final of 77-53. Purdue has picked up some nice wins this year against teams like Auburn, Utah State, and Arizona State, but the Boilermakers could use an elite nonconference win for their resume. Purdue has also been putting up good effort on both ends ranking 28th in the nation in scoring and 55th in total defense. Forward Caleb Swanigan leads the team averaging 15.9 points per game.
This should be a tremendous neutral site in-state battle between two of the better teams to open the year. Purdue should have the advantage in the paint, while Notre Dame has some strong options on the perimeter. In what should be a back and forth affair we’ll side with Purdue’s strength down low as they go on to cover the spread.
