Penn State is coming off another competitive defeat losing to Pittsburgh in their last outing by a final of 73-81. Penn State has been challenging themselves in the nonconference and we believe this group can take a step forward in the Big Ten this year, despite standing just 6-5 overall thus far. The Nittany Lions are working in some intriguing new pieces this season and this group remains a work in progress with a higher ceiling currently ranking 227th in the nation in scoring average and 181st in total defense. Penn State is battled tested and the Nittany Lions spread the ball around with 5 players averaging in double figures scoring. Veteran Shep Gardner leads the team averaging 14.5 points per contest.
Saint John’s is another group that’s a work in progress as head coach Mullin continues to bring in his recruits and implement his system. This Saint John’s group doesn’t have quite the same kind of ceiling as Penn State when playing at their best, but both teams have a lot of underclassmen that they’re getting to play the right way within their respective roles. The Red Storm have opened the year 5-6 overall coming up short in their last outing losing to LIU Brooklyn at home by a final of 73-74. We’re not very high on this Saint John’s team again this season and finishing anywhere but last in the Big East would be an accomplishment for this group. Marcus LoVett is looking to get back into the swing of things today and he leads the Red Storm averaging 18.8 points per game.
This has the ability to be a competitive matchup and Penn State has a decent shot at picking up the upset. Saint John’s is coming off a bad upset defeat and it’ll be interesting to see how the Red Storm bounce back today against a tougher opponent. Take Penn State and the points as a solid value bet.
