The Iona Gaels have tested themselves against a challenging nonconference slate, and even though the Gaels aren’t the favorites to win the MAAC, this squad will be a threat towards the top of the league. Iona has gotten off to a nice start standing 7-3 overall with some quality wins coming against teams like Nevada, Ohio, and NJIT. In their last outing Iona had one of their better offensive performances getting past NJIT at home by a final of 94-80. Iona has slowed up a bit on the offensive end this season ranking 125th in the nation in scoring average and Jordan Washington has stepped up to lead the team averaging 17.9 points per game.
UC Santa Barbara has been awful on both sides of the ball out of the gate this season standing 1-7 overall ranking 318th in the nation in scoring average and 304th in total defense. UCSB was throttled in their last outing on the road against UCLA losing to the high powered Bruins’ attack by a final of 62-102. UC Santa Barbara has yet to pick up a D1 win this season and the Gauchos will face another difficult challenge today on the neutral site. UCSB only has two guys averaging over 9 points per game and Gabe Vincent has led the way averaging 16.4 points per contest.
Iona is trending in the right direction right now and the Gaels’ offense is finally starting to put up some more of the kind of numbers that we expect out of their up-tempo attack. Iona has further to travel to this neutral site game, but we like for the Gaels to keep things going as they deal UCSB another loss as they go on to cover the spread.
