UMass has taken advantage of the easier competition they faced during the nonconference standing 9-3 overall with their only defeats coming against the likes of Ole Miss, UCF, and Providence. In their last outing the Minutemen came through at home against Rider picking up the win by a final of 78-67. UMass is picked to finish in the middle tier of the A-10 this season and thus far the Minutemen’s best wins have come against Temple and Harvard. This group has actually leaned more on their defense which ranks 84th in the nation in points allowed and on the offensive end Donte Clark leads the team averaging 15.6 points per game.
The Georgia State Panthers aren’t the favorites in the Sun Belt this season, but the Panthers should compete in the upper tier of what appears to be an up year for the league as a whole. Georgia State is coming off one of their best results of the nonconference beating Middle Tennessee State on the road by a final of 64-56. Georgia State has faced a much more taxing nonconference slate than UMass and the Panthers currently stand 7-4 overall. The Panthers are another group that’s been somewhat surprisingly leaning on their defense which ranks 80th in the nation in points allowed. On the offensive end transfer Jeremy Hollowell leads the way averaging 14.2 points per game.
This should be a good measuring stick game between these conferences as the A-10 and Sun Belt go head to head as we wind down nonconference action. Georgia State is coming off a great upset win on the road and we like for that momentum to carry over for the Panthers as they go on to win and cover the spread.
