The Xavier Musketeers have gotten off to a nice start this season avoiding bad losses in early games against Lehigh and Missouri on their way to standing 7-0 overall. The Musketeers have looked better since the first week of action coming off recent convincing wins against Northern Iowa (2) and North Dakota State. Xavier might be a little overvalued given some of the results they’ve shown this season, but you can’t deny this is going to be one of the more competitive teams in the highly competitive Big East this season. Xavier ranks 88th in the nation in scoring average and 54th in total defense and returner Trevon Bluiett leads the team averaging 17.7 points per game.
There were legitimate questions as to how good this Baylor squad was going to be coming into the year after losing their top two contributors from last season’s tournament team. Baylor has been putting their doubters to rest thus far standing 7-0 overall with some nice wins coming against teams like Oregon, VCU, Michigan State, and Louisville. There aren’t many teams that have the kind of resume Baylor has put up thus far and in their last outing the Bears handled business against Sam Houston picking up the win by a final of 79-45. Baylor leans on their defense ranking 11th in the nation in points allowed.
This should be a great measuring stick game for both of these squads and another early chance for both of these teams to add to their resumes. We might not be quite as high on both these teams as the pollsters, but these squad are being rewarded for handling their business early on which we have no problem with. In what should be a competitive matchup we’ll side with Xavier and the points given their edge on the offensive end.
