The Auburn Tigers have been a work in progress for head coach Bruce Pearl who’s trying to return this program to relevancy in the SEC. This has been a tough turnaround job for Pearl who’s had a lot of success at his prior stops. Auburn has been playing well this season outside of their 25 point loss against an elite Purdue squad standing 5-1 overall heading into this matchup. In their last outing Auburn had to lean on their offense as the Tigers went on to beat SC Upstate by a final of 90-83. Mustapha Heron has made an instant impact leading the team averaging 16.2 points per game.
The UAB Blazers hoped to put together a nonconference resume strong enough for at-large consideration, but this becomes exceedingly difficult for the Blazers with already 3 defeats on the board. UAB stands 4-3 overall, but the defeats against Kansas and St. Mary’s are understandable. It’s the 10 point home loss against Furman that’ll hurt UAB’s nonconference RPI. In their last outing UAB got past Alabama A&M by a final of 75-45. The Blazers have spread the ball around with their deep lineup and Chris Cokley leads the team averaging 13.7 points per game.
This should be a great measuring stick game for both of these squads. Auburn relies a lot on the three point shot and if this unit can get things going they should have a decent shot at picking up the upset. We like Auburn to keep things competitive in this one as they go on to cover the spread.
