We felt this Wyoming squad was getting overlooked coming into the year and the up-tempo offensive style has done wonders for this group as the Cowboys stand 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the MWC with their opening conference win coming against Air Force at home by a final of 84-72. Wyoming proved recently that they can hang with the top teams as the Cowboys went on to lose to USC in Las Vegas by a final of 92-94. The Cowboys built a lot of confidence throughout their nonconference slate and this group has been putting up solid numbers ranking 91st in the nation in scoring and 151st in total defense. Justin James leads this balanced attack averaging 16.6 points per game.
The UNLV Rebels weren’t expected to have a lot of success this season and it’s been tough for UNLV out of the gate as the Rebels stand 7-7 overall and 0-1 in the MWC with their conference opener coming in a 77-91 loss on the road against Colorado State. UNLV is in rebuild mode as a program and it’ll be interesting to see how long it takes the current coaching staff to turn this group back into a contender in the MWC. To be fair to the Rebels they did go against a challenging nonconference slate and they really don’t have that many poor defeats on their resume. UNLV ranks over 200th in the nation in both scoring average and total defense, and the offense has been led by Jalen Poyser who’s averaging 14.1 points per game.
Wyoming has racked up a lot of their wins at home this season, but this group has also shown respectable play on the road. We’re a bit higher on this Wyoming squad than the Rebels coming into MWC play and we like the Cowboys to push UNLV in this one as they go on to cover the spread.
