The Vanderbilt Commodores haven’t gotten off to their ideal start under new head coach Bryce Drew as this squad stands 5-4 overall coming into this challenging matchup against MTSU. Vandy hasn’t even been going against an elite schedule by any means with their best wins thus far coming against Belmont and Tennessee State. In their last outing Vanderbilt got the job done at home against High Point picking up the win by a final of 90-63. This was a much better showing for the Vandy offense as this group now ranks 188th in the nation in scoring average compared to 99th in total defense. Vanderbilt can spread the ball around with 4 guys averaging in double figures.
Middle Tennessee State is well known for their upset win against Michigan State in the NCAA tournament a season ago, and this group could potentially get back to the Big Dance this season as an at-large if they’re able to continue to rack up the wins. MTSU has opened the year 8-1 overall with their one defeat surprisingly coming against Tennessee State at home. The Blue Raiders are coming off back to back wins on the road against Ole Miss and South Alabama. One of MTSU’s best wins this season would be their 68-63 win over UNCW. The Blue Raiders have three main offensive threats with Williams, Potts, and Upshaw all averaging over 14 points per game.
This should be an excellent measuring stick game for both of these squads in this inner-state matchup. These are the kind of game MTSU has to win if they’re going to have any kind of shot at competing for an at-large bid. This should be a very competitive matchup, but we like MTSU to build off of their home crowd as they go on to win and cover the small spread.
