UT Arlington is one of the favorites to win the Sun Belt this season bringing back a lot of veteran talent to a group that found a good amount of success a season ago. UTA has gotten off to a nice start this season standing 7-3 overall with their best win coming at Texas recently by a final of 72-61. The Mavericks dominated a lower division foe in their last outing taking down UTD at home by a final of 99-49. This veteran group has been steady at both ends of the court ranking 102nd in the nation in scoring average and 134th in total defense. UTA doesn’t have elite offensive threats, but this group can spread It around with 5 averaging over 8 points per game.
Saint Mary’s is trying to get back to the NCAA tournament this season after getting snubbed a year ago by the committee. This could turn into another top 100 RPI win for the Gaels who’ve opened the season strong standing 6-0 overall. Saint Mary’s has stepped up their nonconference schedule this season and the Gaels have picked up some early wins against teams like Nevada, Dayton, and in their last outing at Stanford by a final of 66-51. This veteran squad is one of the more cohesive units in college basketball and this group currently ranks 81st in the nation in scoring average and 26th in total defense. Jack Landale leads the offense averaging 19.7 points per game.
This should be an interesting test between these mid-majors, but Saint Mary’s clearly comes in with the better team and the strong home court advantage. Saint Mary’s always has blowout potential on their home court and we like for the Gaels to get the job done here as they go on to win and cover the large spread against the Mavericks.
