The Houston Cougars have quietly been putting up some nice results this season standing 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the AAC, with a shot to make the NCAA tournament if the Cougars can continue on their current pace. Houston was able to bounce back coming off their home loss against Cincinnati as the Cougars got past the struggling East Carolina Pirates on the road by a final of 74-58. Houston is going back to back on the road and today the Cougars will be challenged by another tough and competitive defensive opponent. Houston has played off of their defense as well standing 15th in the nation in points allowed compared to 126th in scoring average. Rob Gray Jr. leads this offensive attack averaging 20.4 points per game.
We liked the prospects of this UCF squad out performing their preseason expectations and that’s been the case up to this point as the Knights stand 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the AAC. UCF had their 5 game winning streak snapped the other day losing to the improving UConn Huskies on the road by a final of 49-64. UCF loves to play slow in the half court as this squad ranks 3rd in the nation in total defense compared to 291st in scoring average. As things get tougher for UCF in conference play we’ll get a better idea of where this squad really stands. What’s key for UCF is their leading scorer B.J. Taylor is back in the line and he’s averaging 16.6 points and 4.1 assists per contest.
Houston was able to dispatch of ECU in their last outing on the road, but things get a bit tougher today in Orlando. UCF has been playing off of their elite defense all season and this should be another lower scoring contest if the Knights have anything to say about it. On their home court we like UCF to come through in what should be a competitive matchup.
