Memphis runs into a tough challenge on the road today going against a Houston squad that’s battling for their place as a potential at-large team to the NCAA tournament. Memphis has been starting to trend in the wrong direction as of late against a more manageable schedule splitting their last two games to stand 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the AAC. Memphis doesn’t mind playing at a faster pace in comparison to most AAC squads ranking 66th in the nation in scoring average and 122nd in total defense. Memphis wasn’t overwhelming in their last outing getting past South Florida by a final of 62-56 at home and that was comping on the heels of a 10 point loss on the road against Tulsa.
Houston doesn’t get much of a spotlight, but the Cougars have been putting up some respectable results this season standing 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the AAC. Like many teams in this conference, Houston has been playing off of their defense as the Cougars rank 21st in the nation in points allowed compared to 123rd in scoring average. Houston came up short in their last outing on the road losing to UCF by a final of 70-77 and this is becomes a good opportunity for the Cougars to get back on track coming back to their home court. Houston could always use some more resume building wins and this group has been led by Rob Gray who’s averaging 20.8 points per game.
Memphis didn’t look great in their last outing on the road against Tulsa and things don’t get any easier for the Tigers in this one. Houston needs to right the ship coming off a road loss of their own and behind their home crowd advantage we like the Cougars to bounce back as they go on to win and cover the spread.
