Old Dominion has been one of the best defensive teams in the nation this season ranking first in the country giving up just 59.5 points per game on average. The issues for ODU have come on the offensive end as the Monarchs rank just 345th in the nation in scoring average, but at least the Monarchs have had some decent offensive performances inside of CUSA action. Old Dominion stands a respectable 11-7 overall and 4-2 in conference, but the Monarchs surprisingly fell at home in their last outing losing to La Tech by a final of 63-75. ODU leans heavily on their elite defense and on the offensive end it’s been Talley, Caver, and Stith who’ve led the attack averaging in double figures scoring.
The Charlotte 49ers are practically the exact opposite of Old Dominion in terms of what they try to accomplish as the 49ers rank 63rd in the nation in scoring average compared to 336th in total defense. Charlotte hasn’t found a lot of success thus far in conference play standing 8-9 overall and 2-4 in CUSA. Charlotte was able to snap out of their 4 game losing streak in their last outing as the 49ers got past Southern Miss by a final of 82-66. The 49ers have had their issues against the tougher teams in the league losing convincingly against Rice and Marshall. Jon Davis has led the 49ers averaging 18.6 points per game.
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of offensive success Charlotte is able to muster here against the top ranked defensive team in the nation. Old Dominion will look to turn this into a grind it out affair, while Charlotte will try to create some tempo. ODU has had more success thus far in CUSA play and we like for the Monarchs to come through in this one as they go on to cover the spread.
