Akron hasn’t been winning many of their games in the MAC in blowout fashion, but this veteran group continues to put up victories as the Zips sit atop the conference standings 16-3 overall and 6-0 in league play. Akron came through in their last outing against one of the other top performers in the MAC as the Zips went on to beat Eastern Michigan by a final of 70-63. Akron has played in two road games thus far in MAC play with wins coming at Central Michigan and Miami Ohio in what were two competitive results. The Zips are one of the more well balanced teams in the conference ranking 65th in the nation in scoring and 102nd in total defense. Akron is led by big man Isaiah Johnson who’s been a load in the post averaging 15.8 points per game.
Western Michigan might be a bit better than their overall record might suggest and today the Broncos get a chance to prove themselves at home against the top team in the conference. Western Michigan has challenged themselves this season standing 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the MAC with their conference wins coming at home against Toledo and Kent State. The Broncos came up short in their recent road swing losing their last two outings against Eastern Michigan and Buffalo with their offense struggling in their last outing losing to the Bulls by a final of 54-66. Western Michigan has in general been putting up some nice results on the offensive end in MAC play and the Broncos now rank 175th in the nation in scoring average and 300th in total defense.
Akron hasn’t been as consistently dominant as we’d like to see from them in MAC play, but the Zips have often shown stretches of strong play within games in their many competitive conference wins. Western Michigan has clearly been better at home than on the road thus far in the MAC, but we like for the Zips to come through again today as they go on to cover the spread.
