The Georgia Southern Eagles had by far their worst performance of conference play in their last outing, but this is still one of the main threats to make a push for the Sun Belt regular season title as the Eagles stand 14-7 overall and 7-1 in conference. Georgia Southern has shown they can get the job done on the road in league play winning at places like UL Lafayette and UL Monroe and the Eagles are going to have a more road heavy schedule as they head into the stretch run of the regular season. The Eagles are one of the best offensive teams in the conference, but their shots just weren’t falling the other day against South Alabama. This group is led by conference leading scorer Ike Smith who’s putting up 19.3 points per game.
For whatever reason Tory has been a better performer on the road than at home thus far in conference play and the Trojans weren’t able to come through at home again in their last outing falling to Georgia State by a final of 72-78. Troy doesn’t have much in the way of a home court advantage and it seems this group takes a lot more pride in quieting a road crowd than giving fans something to cheer for. Tory is heading back in the wrong direction losing 3 of their last 4 games, including 2 home defeats, to stand 11-11 overall and 3-5 in conference. The Trojans are another one of the higher scoring teams in the Sun Belt ranking 47th in the nation in scoring average and Tory has been led by big man Jordon Varnado who’s averaging 15.4 points per game.
It’ll be interesting to see if Georgia Southern is able to bounce back today or if they continue to struggle shooting the ball like they did in their last outing. The Eagles simply weren’t able to hit open shots against South Alabama, but this can be the case sometimes with squads that live off of the three point ball. Troy doesn’t bring the greatest defense by any means and we like for the top standing team in the Sun Belt to bounce back today as they go on to cover the spread.
