The West Virginia Mountaineers have shown a high ceiling this season beating teams like Virginia, Baylor, and Kansas on their way to standing 17-4 overall and 5-3 in the Big 12. West Virginia is one of the more unique teams in college basketball and as a result the Mountaineers can really thrive in postseason play when they go against teams that aren’t used to facing their system. West Virginia has been very competitive on the road in the Big 12 standing 2-2 with their only road losses coming by razor thin margins at Texas Tech and Kansas State. West Virginia has strengths on both ends of the court ranking 8th in the nation in scoring and 42nd in total defense.
The Iowa State Cyclones weren’t able to come through in their SEC test this past weekend losing to Vanderbilt on the road by a final of 78-84. Iowa State remains safely in the Big Dance at this point in the year standing 13-7 overall and 5-3 in conference going against a tough slate both in and outside of league play. Iowa State surprisingly hasn’t had overwhelming success at home this season really having a tough time in a number of their recent home games. Iowa State is another group that has shown strength on both ends of the court standing 37th in the nation in scoring average and 105th in total defense. Monte Morris leads the attack averaging 16.4 points per game for the Cyclones.
West Virginia has played well on the road this season competing hard in a number of challenging road scenarios. Iowa State has fallen in 3 of their last 5 games overall and fell in a tough recent home test to Kansas by 4 points. We like West Virginia to compete hard again today as they go on to cover this spread against the Cyclones.
