The Western Michigan Broncos are picked to finish in the basement of the MAC West this season and this group has been living up to that billing standing just 4-9 overall and 0-1 in conference. Western Michigan was throttled in their conference opener getting embarrassed by Ohio on the road losing by a final of 58-89. The Broncos have taken a lot of defeats this season, but to be fair this group has been competitive in defeats against teams like Villanova, UNCW, Washington, and UCLA. That type of play didn’t show up in their last outing however and on the year the Broncos rank 184th in the nation in scoring average and 308th in total defense.
The Akron Zips are one of the favorites to win the MAC this season and this veteran group has been solid so far this year standing 11-3 overall and 1-0 in conference. Akron brings effort on both ends of the court as this experienced roster ranks 65th in the nation in scoring average and 101st in total defense. Akron is one of the few teams in the conference that has strengths on both sides of the ball and Akron was able to come through in their conference opener beating Bowling Green at home by a final of 89-84. Akron has won 4 straight and this group picked up some strong nonconference wins against teams like Mercer, Marshall, and Georgia Southern, among others.
Western Michigan looked downright dreadful in their conference opener and now they have to go on the road again today as they face arguably the best team in the MAC. Akron didn’t overwhelm defensive in their conference opener, but we feel the Zips have the offensive firepower to outpace the Broncos as they go on to win and cover the spread.
