The Iona Gaels expect to be a factor in the upper tier of the MAAC again this season and thus far Iona stands 9-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Iona came up short again on the road the other day losing to Fairfield by a final of 87-93 and the Gaels have now lost 3 of their last 4 games heading into this tough road matchup. The Gaels haven’t been the same kind of offensive force that we’re used to seeing from their program as this group ranks 131st in the nation in scoring average as well as 223rd in total defense. Iona has one of the best players in the conference leading them as big man Jordan Washington is averaging an impressive 18.4 points per game.
Monmouth hasn’t been showing the same kind of spark we saw from them last year and that’s a surprise given how much talent has returned to this group. Monmouth is sitting in the middle of the pack right now in the MAAC standing 10-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Monmouth is riding a three game losing streak and in their last outing the Hawks fell short on the road against Saint Peter’s losing to the Peacocks by a final of 61-71. This was one of the worst offensive performances on the year for Monmouth and this group now ranks 70th in the nation in scoring average and 270th in total defense. Monmouth has still shown glimpses of strong play this year and the squad is led by veteran Justin Robinson who’s averaging 17.7 points per game.
Both of these teams are heading in the wrong direction, but we see both of these squad rebounding in the coming months as they both will likely compete near the top of the league. Monmouth should have a fire lit under themselves and behind their home court advantage we like the Hawks to come through as they go on to win and cover the spread.
