Wichita State is the clear cut favorites to win the MVC, especially with how they’ve opened conference play now standing 13-3 overall and 3-0 in league action. Wichita State has been impressive on both sides of the ball this season ranking around 30th in the nation in both scoring average and total defense. Wichita State is the only team that has a legitimate shot at getting an at-large bid to the Big Dance, but to do that the Shockers need to consistently handle their business in MVC play. In their last outing the Shockers came through against Drake at home picking up the win by a final of 90-65. Wichita State brings a balanced offensive attack with 9 players averaging between 4-13 points per game.
Northern Iowa has been the biggest disappointment in the MVC so far this season as the Panthers stand just 5-9 overall and 0-3 in league play. Northern Iowa’s struggles have stemmed from their poor offensive production as the Panthers rank just 333rd in the nation in scoring average compared to a more respectable 71st in total defense. Northern Iowa was picked to finish 3rd in the MVC, but that doesn’t appear like an accomplishable placing at this point in the year. In their last outing Northern Iowa came up short on the road losing to Loyola Chicago by a final of 66-77. Northern Iowa leans heavily on Jeremy Morgan who’s leading the squad averaging 16.7 points per game.
Wichita State has motivation coming into every MVC matchup knowing they don’t have much margin of error if they want to keep their RPI high. Northern Iowa has been awful offensively this season and we don’t see that changing today against the top defensive team in the conference. Take Wichita State to come through on the road as they go on to win and cover the spread.
