UT Arlington has high expectations coming into the year and the Mavericks have been solid out of the gate standing 7-1 overall with their only defeat coming by just 1 point at top 25 team Alabama. UTA plays in an undervalued league, the Sun Belt, and making it to the NCAA tournament out of this league is tough given you have to get through the 12 team postseason tournament. UT Arlington has had regular season success in recent years and they’re looking to build a solid resume this go around to perhaps get some at-large consideration come March. This group has been led by Kevin Hervey who’s averaging 23.4 points per game.
Northern Iowa has gone against a challenging slate out of the gate with some nice wins coming against teams like UNLV, NC State, and SMU. The Panthers have been better than expected to start the season standing 6-2 overall with their only defeats coming against top 10 opponents North Carolina and Villanova. UNI looks like they could be the MVC favorites coming into conference action, but they’ll get major tests from teams like Valparaiso, Missouri State, and Loyola Chicago. Northern Iowa brings great defensive effort every single game and on the offensive end it’s been Bennett Koch who’s led the team averaging 17 points per game.
This should be a fun game to watch as two of the better mid-major teams in the nation go head to head during the nonconference. Northern Iowa has a strong home court advantage, but they’ll get a tough test today from the consistent Mavericks. In what should be a close game we’ll side with UTA’s offense to make the difference as the road team goes on to cover the spread.
