The Oakland Golden Grizzlies have fallen off quite a bit over the past three weeks, compared to the level they were playing at earlier in conference play and back during the nonconference. Oakland has taken three recent home defeats as well as an embarrassing 67-88 loss on the road on their way to falling 16-7 overall and 6-4 in conference. Oakland is still a threat if they can recapture some of their prior form as this is arguably the most talented roster in the Horizon. The Golden Grizzlies have slipped up on both ends of the court at time, but Oakland still ranks a respectable 83rd in the nation in scoring average and 127th in total defense.
Youngstown State was able to hold on in their last outing at home against Cleveland State beating the Vikings by a final of 67-64. This was a slower paced game than Youngstown State typically plays as the Penguins rank 90th in the nation in scoring compared to just 339th in total defense. Like many teams in the Horizon this year, YSU has been very streaky on a game to game basis, but this group has proven themselves in wins for instance on the road against teams like Green Bay and Wright State in league play. Youngstown State is always a threat given they have one of the top offensive threats in the conference in Cameron Morse who’s averaging 22.5 points per game.
Oakland has been far from where we’d expect them to be at this point in the year and it’s rare to see regression from a Kampe coached group. Oakland should have a decent shot at pulling out this win on the road, but the Golden Grizzlies have had some of their worst recent performances against the bottom half of the Horizon. We like the home team to keep things close as they go on to cover the spread.
