Mark Cuban hates losing and last year, even though they finished at .500 for the year the Mavericks seemed to do way more losing than winning. This year however, with a healthy Dirk Nowitzki and a new core of talented free agents, that one year trend is looking to change. The expectations for a playoff birth and a winning season are there but the real idea here is to convince one of the marquee free agents next summer that Dallas is the place to be.

As the Mavericks missed out on the Chris Paul and Dwight Howard sweepstakes this past offseason they have transitioned to building a roster with depth and balance. Rick Carlisle is one of the better coaches in the league and will always find a way to get he most out of his players. Vince Carter, at least last season, seems to have made himself into one of the premier 6th men in the league and his scoring to go along with Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon will make this a team that can put up some serious points. The Mavs will need Monta Ellis to improve his decision making and take better care of the ball in order to have more consistent success and if anyone can give him the guidance he needs it is Rick Carlisle. It honestly seems that the fate of this team could be decided by how well an aging Dirk Nowitzki can preform on a season long level. He has height and a buttery smooth jump shot and a literally unblockable fade away so assuming he can stay healthy there is no reason this team will not be back in the playoffs. Floor spacing is going to be a huge key for this Mavericks team with their lack of a true big man. Dirk is more of an away from the rim player shot making big, therefore Dejuan Blair will have to be a beast on the boards and provide an interior presence. Real success for this team will be showing that they are a desirable landing spot one of the big names next season.

Projection: 44-38
