Key Additions: Paul Millsap, Elton Brand, Gustavo Ayon, and Dennis Schroder
Key Departures: Josh Smith and Zaza Pachulia
The Atlanta Hawks have been amazingly consistent in recent years making the playoffs last six seasons. This is due in large part to the sterling management in the front office, and Danny Ferry looks to be continuing that tradition this year with several shrew roster moves. Cutting ties with Josh Smith could be one of the best things to ever happen to this franchise as he was an incredibly selfish inconsistent scorer with a propensity to jack up three after three even though he shot at a sub 24 percent clip from behind the arc last year. Resigning sharpshooter Kyle Korver was a huge move as well as bringing in Paul Millsap who according to many stats was a drastically better and more efficient player than Smith last year. Bringing in Elton Brand at a bargain price on a one year deal will give this team a solid veteran to bolster the bench and provide a presence that this team could definitely use.
This coming season looks like another solid one but also another year where it will be extremely unlikely for them to make it to the next level. Al Horford is a stud and will anchor this team from the inside with fierce rebounding and the ability to bang with anyone in the league down low. Having Korver and hopefully Louis Williams, when he is back from his ACL tear, making shots from the perimeter as well as possibly Millsap giving them some knock down potential from the corners the Hawks ave the ability to put up enough points to be in the playoff hunt once again. The issue for this team looks to be possibly on the defensive end where their numbers are expected to take somewhat of a dip with Smith's absence. Once again this team looks to finish the year in the thick of the playoff race but will not really have much of a shot at advancing. The financial flexibility the Hawks have managed to retain, while remaining competitive, will allow them to be players in this summer's loaded free agent class. Next season the Atlanta Hawks could be looking to swoop into actual contention.
